How Long Was the Inca Road System (Qhapaq Ñan)?

The Qhapaq Ñan (Quechua for “the great road” or “the royal road”) was the largest and most sophisticated road network in the pre-Columbian Americas. Modern archaeological and historical research places the total length of the system at between 30,000 and 50,000 kilometers, with a core network of royal roads of approximately 25,000 kilometers connecting Cusco to the four corners of the Inca Empire. The system extended from the southern frontier of the empire at the Maule River in central Chile to the northern frontier in southern Colombia, and from the Pacific coast to the upper Amazon basin. In 2014, the Qhapaq Ñan was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List as a transnational serial nomination covering 273 associated components spread across six modern countries: Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, and Peru.

The Trunk Roads of the Empire

The Qhapaq Ñan radiated outward from Cusco in four trunk roads corresponding to the four suyus of the empire. The four trunk roads, with their approximate lengths, were:

  • The Chinchaysuyu road, which extended from Cusco to Quito — a distance the chroniclers put at roughly 1,800 to 2,000 kilometers (a straight-line figure; the routed highland road in modern reconstructions is closer to 3,500 to 4,000 kilometers). The road is well documented in the Relaciones Geográficas de Indias and in the work of chroniclers such as Pedro Cieza de León.
  • The Antisuyu road, which descended from Cusco into the eastern forests. The Antisuyu road was the shortest of the four in its Inca-period extension, generally estimated at 200 to 400 kilometers, with a continuation into the lowland forests by trail.
  • The Collasuyu road, which extended from Cusco south across the altiplano and through the Andean portions of modern Chile to the Maule River, with a total length of approximately 3,600 kilometers, passing through the sanctuary of the Island of the Sun in Lake Titicaca.
  • The Cuntisuyu road, which extended from Cusco to the Pacific coast and then south along the coast to the Atacama frontier, with a total length of approximately 2,000 kilometers plus a further 1,500 kilometers of coastal extension.

Adding the four trunk roads alone yields a core network of approximately 7,000 to 8,000 kilometers. When secondary roads, regional connectors, and local access roads are included, the total length of the system rises to 30,000 to 50,000 kilometers, depending on the definition used by the surveyor.

The UNESCO World Heritage Inscription

In 2014, the Qhapaq Ñan was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List under the title “Qhapaq Ñan, Andean Road System.” The nomination was a transnational, serial nomination covering six modern countries, the first of its kind for a road system in the Americas. The 273 components are distributed across the six countries as follows: Peru (163), Argentina (37), Bolivia (33), Chile (17), Ecuador (12), and Colombia (11). The UNESCO nomination estimates the total length of the inscribed sections at approximately 6,000 kilometers, which represents the most thoroughly documented and best-preserved portion of the system.

Methodological Problems and Estimates

The exact length of the Qhapaq Ñan is difficult to determine, and the range of 30,000 to 50,000 kilometers reflects several methodological uncertainties. The principal sources of uncertainty include:

  • The inclusion of secondary and local roads: Some scholars count only the trunk roads and their main branches, yielding an estimate of 20,000 to 25,000 kilometers. Others include the full network of secondary and local roads, yielding estimates as high as 50,000 kilometers.
  • The identification of Inca-period roads: It is not always possible to distinguish Inca roads from pre-Inca or post-Inca roads, particularly in the highlands where road-building techniques have a long history.
  • The boundaries of the system: The definition of what counts as a road is itself uncertain. Some surveys count only engineered roads with stone paving, retaining walls, or other permanent features; others include unpaved trails and roads used primarily for llama traffic.
  • Regional variation in preservation: Roads in the highland core are well documented, but roads in the lowland and coastal peripheries have been less studied.

The most widely cited estimate, that of John Hyslop in his 1984 monograph The Inka Road System, places the total length of the system at 30,000 to 40,000 kilometers. More recent surveys, including the work of the Qhapaq Ñan Project led by Peruvian archaeologist Javier Lumbreras, have tended to extend the upper bound of this estimate.

Comparison with Other Pre-Columbian Roads

The Qhapaq Ñan is the largest road system known from the pre-Columbian Americas, but it is not the only one. Other pre-Columbian cultures built extensive road systems, including the Maya, who constructed sacbeob (raised paved causeways) connecting the cities of the lowland Maya region, and the Aztec, who built causeways in the Basin of Mexico. Neither of these systems, however, approached the scale of the Qhapaq Ñan. The Maya sacbeob were short raised causeways, generally a few hundred meters to a few kilometers in length and rarely connected across long distances; the longest single causeways are on the order of tens of kilometers. The combined network of known Maya sacbeob, even summed across the lowland Maya region, is at least an order of magnitude smaller than the Inca system.

In a global comparative context, the Qhapaq Ñan is comparable in scale to the Roman road system, which is generally estimated at 80,000 to 100,000 kilometers at its peak in the second century AD. The Roman system was, in absolute terms, the largest pre-industrial road system in the world, but the Inca system was built and maintained without wheeled vehicles, draft animals (other than the llama), or iron tools.

Engineering Standards and Construction

The roads of the Qhapaq Ñan were built to a remarkably uniform standard given the geographical diversity they traversed. In the highlands, roads were typically 3 to 6 meters wide, paved with fitted stone or compacted earth, with retaining walls along steep sections, drainage channels along the shoulders, and stairways where the gradient was too steep for a road. In the coastal desert, roads were often built as raised causeways across the loose sand, and in the lowland forests, they were cut into the hillsides as embankments above the level of seasonal flooding.

The construction of the road system was a major state enterprise, undertaken by mit’a labor drawn from the surrounding provinces. The Spanish chronicler Pedro Cieza de León recorded that the construction and maintenance of the Qhapaq Ñan was the responsibility of the provincial governors, who were required to keep the roads in good repair and to maintain the tambos and bridges that served them.

Historical Significance

The Qhapaq Ñan was the principal instrument of integration of the Inca Empire, and its length — whether 30,000 or 50,000 kilometers — is a measure of the scale of imperial ambition. The road system enabled the rapid movement of armies, the transmission of goods and tribute, the relay of messages by chasqui runners, and the migration of populations through the mitma resettlement program. Many sections of the road remain in use today, and the system is recognized as one of the great engineering achievements of the pre-industrial world.
